Because I want my students to get the most out of lessons, I start every curriculum with an interview of the student, to find out what their goals are. Whether wanting to play with high technical proficiency, compose their own songs, play in a band, improvise solos or just learn some songs to play by the campfire, I am confident that with a customized curriculum I can help you or child reach any and all of your music goals.
Generally guitar lessons will be split into 3 parts: doing technique exercises, learning theory, and learning songs. This could be a theme song from a movie, video game, tv show or a song on the radio—anything the student has interest in. If the student has no interest I will pick the songs. For students doing only half hour lessons, much of the time in the beginning will be spent learning technique and theory, 2nd priority will be learning songs.
Many people are afraid to learn music theory but with guitar it's a must. Because there is no way to visually see the notes on the fretboard as you can on the keyboard, there is no getting around learning the patterns early on. Learning guitar without understanding the notes is like going through a dark cave with a small candle, sure you might have fun and see a little bit, but I want to send you into that cave with a flood light and extra batteries, that's what having an understanding of the notes and intervals is like. I promise learning basic theory is really not anymore complicated than basic arithmetic. But as I said I'm open to organizing the curriculum however you'd like.
